Another week, another theme, and another image. Continuing the story of my 2025 Project52, with week 5. The theme for this week was texture.
Having started to recover from the virus I contracted during the previous week, I was hopeful for that I could make a new image for this week’s challenge. While not fully recovered at the beginning of the week, I was still able to do my usual research and look for inspiration.
Photographing Texture
When photographing texture, lighting is one of the biggest factors to consider. Side lighting works best because it creates shadows and highlights that make the texture stand out. The angle you shoot from also plays an important role. Some perspectives can really emphasize texture, while others might make it look flat. Depth of field is another thing to think about. A shallow depth of field can help isolate certain textures, while a deeper one keeps more details in focus.
There are also some challenges to watch out for. Fine details can be lost if the lighting is too harsh or if the exposure isn’t right. Shadows might become too dark, or highlights could wash out important texture. Wind can be a problem when shooting things like fabric or grass, making textures appear blurry.
My Week 5 Image
Feeling a little healthier on the Saturday, I decided to pay a visit to an area of woodland where my archery club has a field course. The club was doing some maintenance that day, and I want to at least try and help. As it turned out, I wasn’t much of a help. Even walking around was tiring.
Woodland is a great place to find different textures. From the bark on the trees to leaves and ferns on the floor, textures are everywhere. I had a few ideas for my week 5 image, most of which I would be able to capture in the woodland. I captured a selection of images in the woodland and eventually chose the image you see as the featured image of this post. A couple of the other images I captured are shown below.

Interestingly, both shots above are of the same tree stump. The different mosses are growing on different faces of the stump.
Wrapping Up Project52 Week 5
This week’s challenge was a reminder to me that you can make images anywhere. Even though I couldn’t make a dedicated trip out for photography, I still captured interesting images. This is something I need to keep in mind as the Project52 continues. I need to train myself to see photographically, even when I may not actively be engaged in photography. It is for the same reason that I chose to try and complete this Project52 with an iPhone rather than a DSLR or a mirrorless camera.
As always, thanks for stopping by and taking time to read my ramblings. If you have any questions or advice, please leave me a comment below.
See you next week.
